Making Connections Birmingham

The starting point of the course is that making connections within communities is a basic human activity for most individuals. Not to be connected has consequences – for people’s sense of self, for their behaviour, and for resources and services dedicated to supporting labelled people. Too many people with learning difficulties live in the community but are rarely an active part of it. The course introduces participants to some basic and practical community building concepts and methods which can be applied as part of their job to great effect.Although there is an expectation that people with learning difficulties will be ‘included’ in communities, human services workers around the UK have had few opportunities to build their understanding of community or to develop practical strategies for connecting people in any meaningful or planned way. This course gets to the heart of why and how.
