Developing Person Centred Approaches In Mental Health Care For People Who Have A Learning Disability

This abstract from the forthcoming seminar by Mr Dave Ferguson. The Green Light Toolkit Project in Southampton City identified that person centred approaches for people with mental health needs who have a learning disability require further development. This presentation will discuss the issues facing people who experience mental ill health (who have a learning disability), share some of the recommendations from the Green Light Toolkit Project, discuss the development of a user/carer/professional working group to develop person centred approaches using a recovery model (Persons Individual Plan - PIP) and discuss progress made to date. Mr Ferguson is a Consultant Nurse (Mental Health in Learning Disability)with the Hampshire Partnership NHS Trust. Dave Ferguson has been in his current post almost five years. Academic and professional qualifications include: MA (Advanced Professional Practice in Health Care), BNS(Hons), RN(LD), CN(LD), CPT qualifications. Prior to his current post Dave worked for the University of Southampton, School of Nursing and Midwifery as a Teaching Fellow with specific responsibilities for the Forensic (Learning Disability) pathway, BSc Community Nursing (Learning Disability) course and was a principal lecturer on the then Dual Diagnosis (Mental Health in Learning Disability) programme. The rest of his career has been in various positions within Specialist Community Learning Disability Teams. Dave’s clinical interests are in clinical risk assessment and management and ecological perspectives in the assessment of mental health in learning disability. Research interests are in service model responses to mental health in learning disability, the development of eco-maps to facilitate the insight of mental illness to people who have a learning disability and participatory research.
