Autism - answering important questions
The label autism is a relatively new phenomenon. However, since Leo Kanner’s original use of the
term, it has become clear that a diagnosis of autism can have a wide range of complicated implications.
Autism is not a single entity but a complex continuum. As our knowledge of autism increases, its sheer complexity means that the provision of support and services must be flexible and varied. This means that parents, carers and professionals often face questions about ASD that are difficult to answer easily.
First, what are the strengths and
weaknesses of the ABA approach?
Second, how do we provide person
centred services?
Third, what are the best strategies
for educating and supporting people?
Fourth, how do we manage difficult
behaviours in a non aversive manner?
