willnicklin's Home Autism - answering important questions   Tullamore Court Hotel, Co Offaly , 2008-11-12 09:45:00 - 2008-11-13 16:45:00
The label autism is a relatively new phenomenon. However, since Leo Kanner’s original use of the term, it has become clear that a diagnosis of autism can have a wide range of complicated implications. Autism is not a single entity but a complex continuum. As our knowledge of autism increases, its sheer complexity means that the provision of support and services must be flexible and varied. This means that parents, carers and professionals often face questions about ASD that are difficult to answer easily. First, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the ABA approach? Second, how do we provide person centred services? Third, what are the best strategies for educating and supporting people? Fourth, how do we manage difficult behaviours in a non aversive manner?

We know that it can be very powerful when people with learning disabilities take part in staff training. However, working with co-trainers does not always feel like working as equals. Some experienced trainers find it hard to adapt and want co-trainers to just follow their lead. It’s not easy for people with learning disabilities to feel confident that they can have good or different ideas about doing training. This event is based on the lessons we learnt in the Training Partnership project. It will look at how to develop the skills to work and train together as equals. The ideas will be useful for working together in many different ways, not just for training.
