Nurturing Emotional Development

Target audience: Education practitioners from all fields including education welfare officers, teachers, headteachers, educational psychologists and support assistants, social workers, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, youth workers, foster agencies and those working with LAC. Although nurture groups have been around for over 40 years there has been a huge increase in numbers across the UK and beyond due to the effectiveness of this approach. Designed originally for mainstream primary and nursery school settings, this approach has shown to be so effective that is has moved successfully into secondary and special schools. It is a short term, focussed intervention, based on sound theory and research, which addresses and develops the skills essential for successful learning, missed due to early life experiences that were impoverished for a wide variety of reasons. The approach therefore empowers children/ young people and their parents to develop coping strategies and resilience, enabling them to access education, maximise their potential and, ultimately, gives them the possibility of positive life choices.
